Grind it
Post Published: 31 October 2009Well, Petersen’s boys let off the gas. Backup blur all over the field. The entire second team defense is in. It’s nice to get a look at Stanaway and Febis at the safety spots. I talked to both of them this week. I’m not sure I have the words to explain how they felt, grinding it out in practice all season, just hoping to get a few reps in junk time.
And finally, with 7:33 to go, Doug Martin gets his first carry since the Tulsa game.
Pick Six
Post Published: 31 October 2009Kyle Wilson finally gets in the end zone. The senior cornerback has struggled this season to create sudden change as teams avoid his side of the field. The Spartans have done nothing of the sort, trying to get the ball to Kevin Jurovich. Wilson just stepped in front of Jurovich on a 10-yard slant, made a bee-line to the end zone to score from 27-yards out. That’s 38-7.
Oh, and the Spartans just put Kyle Reed in at quarterback.
This is how they do it
Post Published: 31 October 2009Dominating defense, another 3-and-out to start the second half, Billy Winn and Shea McClellin shared a TFL. Then the BSU offense got its roll on. It only needed to convert one third down on the drive (a 23-yard play-action roll where Moore hit Brockel for a first) that made it 31-7. Second-down conversions were instead the norm. Moore hit Pettis on an easy fade to the right side to punch it in. Jeremy Avery also got out of the red with a couple positive runs.
Halftime Numbers
Post Published: 31 October 2009Okay, here are some stats that pop out: BSU rushing stats, 18 carries, 8 yards. Why can’t they rush the football against the worst rush defense in the WAC? Not sure I get that one. You gotta look at Kellen Moore, who hasn’t looked perfect, but 14-for-24, 221 yards and two scores will do. Titus Young only has one catch and that had to be reviewed to count. Kevin Jurovich has five catches for 44 yards for the Spartans.
J-Rob
Post Published: 31 October 2009Not a very good nickname for the junior nickel back, but Jason Robinson earns his keep, stripping Lamon Muldrow of the ball as the Spartans tried to run out the clock. Robinson recovered his own strip. Kellen Moore hit Tyler Shoemaker on that big inside screen down to the 1-yard line and Moore snuck it in to make it a 24-7 game at the half. That’s two touchdowns in 33 seconds. It was close, but now it looks like another runaway game.
On the Board Again
Post Published: 31 October 2009Field position is key. Kyle Brotzman blasts a 67-yard punt to pin the Spartans deep, forcing SJSU to actually punt the ball to Kyle Wilson following another 3-and-out. Wilson’s 17-yard return gave Kellen Moore a short field. He hit Kaiserman for 12 yards, then found Mitch Burroughs wide open on the corner route. It only took 51 seconds to score.
Role Play
Post Published: 31 October 2009On the drive following Brotzman’s field goal, the Bronco defense brought out Root, Hout, Koontz and Nisby on the defensive line; Acrey and Tevis at linebacker. That’s a whole new front-6 come in fresh to force a 3-and-out. Also Jerrell Gavins has replaced Brandyn Thompson at right corner. I doubt it’s a permanent fix, but Gavins has skills, no reason to leave his speed on the bench.
Brotzman
Post Published: 31 October 2009The junior placekicker drove through a 32-yard field goal to give the Broncos a lead. The drive (aided by a stellar run and catch by Austin Pettis and a roughing the passer penalty) stalled in the red zone. Not sure why they ran Kaiserman on 3rd and 9. We’ll see.
Recovery
Post Published: 31 October 2009The Kellen Moore fumble gave spurred a Spartan 77-yard, 11-play scoring drive. La Secla lobbed the fade over Brandyn Thompson to the right side of the end zone. It was a good solid drive for SJSU, to answer the bell and tie the game.
Titus Young
Post Published: 31 October 2009Coach Chris Petersen said Titus Young would be punished for his unsportsmanlike antics at Hawaii. He punishment comes in the form of playing time. Young has been obviously absent on this second scoring drive. Boy does Kellen look good, scrambling, stepping up in the pocket, rolling out and hitting players in stride. For the first time this season i wrote “Pettis Drop” in my notebook. He dropped a wide open pass that could have scored.
