3 and outs
Post Published: 27 November 2009Both teams punted away possessions to begin the second half. Moore has missed his last five passes. Brotzman had a 28-yard punt. U-G-L-Y
Drill
Post Published: 27 November 2009The 2-minute kind, this one engineered by Colin Kaepernick when Moore couldn’t do it for the Broncos. Nevada drove 79 yards in a minute and a half to close the lead to 27-16. Kaepernick hit Brandon Wimberly three times in a row to drive his Pack. Wimberly caught the 3-yard fade to make this a game again.
Adjustments at the half? BSU needs to focus on the run still, forever against Nevada, which needs to find some answers to Moore. Anytime either team punts it’s a failure. With potent offenses on both sides, if one team can make a few stops, force some second-half punts, it should get the win.
On the Board
Post Published: 27 November 2009Nevada finally punched it on to cap a deliberate drive (11 plays, 71 yards, 6:21) when Kaepernick hit Virgil Green on a play-action pass to the left side. We’ve seen a lot of play-action availability for both sides, but especially for teh Wolf Pack, which converted a 4th down play on a rollout pass. Drake missed the extra point to make it 27-9 BSU, which gets the ball back with 3:38 remaining in this soaking wet first half.
Dan Paul
Post Published: 27 November 2009Kellen Moore’s record-breaking touchdown pass to Dan Paul was the fullback’s third of the game. Paul got his first reception of the season last week against Utah State. He has three tonight, all for scores. I bet Richie Brockel is all smiles, as his young backup scorescorescores. Paul used to play linebacker here, but moved to fullback to get in the game. Good move? I think so.
Bow
Post Published: 27 November 2009Your necks defense! Against an offense like Nevada, holding the Wolf Pack to a 26-yard Ricky Drake field goal is a bit of a win. I don’t think anyone thought Nevada would get shut out. I wonder if that 2-point conversion failure will come back to haunt Chris Petersen. Not only did it fail, but it lost him Austin Pettis to injury. I like the guts to go for it, but I also think there are times to just kick the extra point.
End First
Post Published: 27 November 2009I don’t think this is how I saw this game going through one quarter. BSU leads 20-0, but Nevada is driving as the quarter ends, probably will punch it in. I stick to my guns on this: the winner must score at least 52 points. Moore looks great, Nevada is running hard between the tackles. Pettis is out, Mackey is out. It’s wet and nasty and … well, it’s football folks. You never know exactly what you’ll get.
Three’s Company
Post Published: 27 November 2009I guess I’m just counting touchdowns to this point. Kellen Moore went over 100 yards passing with five minutes left in the first quarter. BSU has had no trouble moving the ball.
With Moore’s second touchdown pass to Dan Paul (yes, fullback Dan Paul) he tied Bart Hendricks’ school record with 35 touchdowns in a season. And he’s still got a game and three quarters left.
Score score
Post Published: 27 November 2009That’s two for BSU. Chris Ault chose not to got for it on 4th and 1 and punted to BSU, only to allow the Broncos to drive all the way down the field. It was an odd drive, riddled with long passes to wide receivers, assuming open space in the worst-ranked Nevada pass defense. But BSU was able to run it as well. That’s a good thing. If Moore puts fear into the Nevada secondary, the run game will open up.
Kickoff Return!
Post Published: 27 November 2009After some confusion on the coin toss, Titus Young returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. He fumbled it twice before getting control and cutting it upfield. BSU 7, Nevada 0.
