Pre-game Nevada

Post Published: 27 November 2009

It pours when it rains and when it freezes, we call it snow baby. We’ll see how it all affects the game. The ball will be slick, which may cause multiple (and untimely) fumbles. But it also makes it hard for the quarterbacks to grip and the receivers to catch. Rain is kryptonite for offense. But it also affects the defense, in the course of tracking down ball-carriers. When the ground is slick (a serious downfall of field turf, seriously? Tiny rubber balls?) defenders can’t react to cutbacks or double moves on receivers. The whole game has to be played a little slower. In a game where speed often provides the kill-shot, the team that can ‘weather the storm’ and keep its feet will come out on top.
I think the rain favors Nevada and its rushing attack. It’s just safer to hand the ball off than to throw it, but that read play may also be hard to handle in these elements.
Either way, we’re in for a defining game for these two programs

Avery’s 1,000

Post Published: 20 November 2009

Jeremy Avery took a naked pitch to the right and picked up 23 yards early in the fourth quarter to break the 1,000 yard barrier for the season. He needed 108 yards to reach the mark. Both he and Doug Martin have rushed for more than 100 yards tonight.

Kyle just set a personal record with a 52-yard field goal, from center field. It looked good from 60. Kid’s got a leg. When the drive stalled, Moore’s incompletions adding up.
This may be the first time in his career that his completion percentage has dipped below 60 percent in a game.

Double Fake

Post Published: 20 November 2009

For the second time in the game, the Aggies successfully converted a fake punt and followed it with a score. The fake, a 10-yard run by Michael Smith helped set up his own 12-yard score. It made it a 42-21 game. The Aggies need three scores to tie it.

Robert Turbin took an option pitch 32 yards to put the Aggies in business (George Iloka made the tackle, but was hurt on the play). Then the Bronco defense closed the doors. Winterswyk recorded a TFL, Baker got a sack and then Wilson broke up a pass.
Borel has been under pressure all night long, but he’s evaded it to marginal success. It makes your heart skip a beat when he gets free, but the secondary has done well in the second half sticking with their receivers.

Jeremy took the old counter trey right, followed his blocks, sped through the second level and just like that BSU scores it’s fifth rushing touchdown of the game, Avery’s second.
Mitch Burroughs hit Pettis for a 16-yard pass on a reverse run-action. Pettis reached out and got the pass, sliding on the turf. None of the receivers have touchdowns today. Is that by design? Did Pettis get too much love last week? I think they want Avery to reach 1,000 yards. Maybe tonight?

90-second drill

Post Published: 20 November 2009

The Broncos just ran 10 plays in 1:28 to score. That’s one play every 8.8 seconds. The key play was a 17-yard run by Doug Martin on third-and-10. After the run, Kellen went into the drill, completing a 32-yarder to Pettis and an 18-yard screen to Young.
BSU let Martin finish what he kept going, on a 1-yard plunge off the left side.
BSU leads 35-14 at the half.

Borel finally got sacked (by McClellin, 12 yards) and then fumbled the next option and Ryan Winterswyk recovered it.
It took the Broncos 4 whole seconds to score. With Chris Potter at quarterback, Martin came in motion, took the handoff, then handed it off again to Jeremy Avery, who ran it the nine yards to make it 28-14.
BSU has 14 points off turnovers.

That’s Titus Young, what a tremendous reception! Moore hit him on the bomb, the fourth thrown already in this game (the first connected) for 52 yards, setting up Doug Martin’s sprint to the left side of the zone. It’s 21-14.
Although the Aggies are sticking in it, BSU continues to score.
