Logan Arrival
Post Published: 20 November 2009We pulled into Logan and ate lunch at Angie’s “Where the Locals Eat” and now sit in the pressbox at Romney Stadium. It’s cold but not that bad. The weather folk promise snow for us tonight. It only took four hours to get here, but the all-nighter may be a bit longer. Drive sage out there.
Brotzman
Post Published: 14 November 2009For a punter to be eligible for punting statistics he must punt an average of three times per game. Kyle Brotzman does not qualify, because the Broncos don’t punt enough. Today he has three, but it’s not common.
Kaiserman
Post Published: 14 November 2009You hate to see it. I think BSU just lost Matt Kaiserman for the rest of the 2009 campaign. His right foot got caught under a tackle and flattened out. The call was initially a fumble, but later ruled down by contact. The guy just tries so hard and to see him fall … tragic.
Pettis
Post Published: 14 November 2009Yeah, I mean, yeah. The guy is good. Both he and Young are over 100 yards receiving, but Pettis just caught his fourth TD of the game, his 14th on the season. The single-season BSU receiving mark is now his alone. The fourth was just a skinny post in the red zone. It’s 63-17.
The only problem now is who to give player of the game to. Pettis has my vote, but Moore threw him all those ball. Austin gets mine because he also partially blocked a punt and threw for a 2-point conversion.
Clean and Jerk
Post Published: 14 November 2009That’s a clean pick flying to his left by Brandyn Thompson, so unheralded playing opposite Wilson. That’s Reader’s fourth interception in the game.
Austin Pettis caught his seventh pass (109 yards, 3 TD), a fly down the right sideline in which the defender held his left arm and Pettis caught the ball with his right hand, bobbling it, but making the grab. This is the emergence of a great receiver.
The Broncos scored on a halfback pass from Matt Kaiserman to Efaw. 56-17. Wow.
Didn’t get the memo?
Post Published: 14 November 2009Idaho had to stop turning the ball over and then Reader did it again. Kyle Wilson stepped in front of a third-down pass, bobbled, but brought it in and returned the kick for 71 yards and a touchdown. It’s Wilson’s second TD return of the season. The score is 49-17.
On the previous BSU drive, Kellen Moore missed a third-down pass and waved the punt team off the mid-field, but Chris Petersen is still in charge and BSU punted.
Halftime Thoughts
Post Published: 14 November 2009It’s important for BSU to keep the foot on the gas. The Broncos have used no-huddle and hurry-up offenses throughout the half, running behind pulling linemen and Moore is just off the chain. He is 15-for-20 for 199 yards and 4 TDs in the half. His connections Pettis gave the junior receiver a tie for the single-season touchdown record, tying Don Hutt and Mike Holton, who set their records in 1973 and ‘74 respectively.
The Vandals need to be patient with their running game, which is working. There are some huge holes behind that massive offensive line, but it’s hard to holster your guns when you face a Bronco barrage. The Vandals haven’t been stopped on downs, no punts, but three huge turnovers are the difference in this game. BSU didn’t play a down in its own territory until its third drive. The short field leave odd yardage totals. BSU only has 32 more total yards than Idaho, but leads 42-17.
Idaho must take care of the ball, stop stopping themselves.
Bronco Jet
Post Published: 14 November 2009Titus young took a kickoff eight yards deep in the end zone following the Idaho touchdown and returned the thing all the way to score. He was credited for a 100-yard return, tying the school record. The touchdown and a missed 51-yard field goal by Idaho placekicker Trey Farquhar gave BSU a 42-17 halftime lead.
Vandal train
Post Published: 14 November 2009Reader saved a dawdling drive by finding Daniel Hardy wide open over the middle for 59 yards, setting up a red-zone opportunity. Twice the Vandals converted third downs by penalty on the drive, both personal fouls.
Woolridge scored on his third try inside the 5-yard line, going over 100 yards in the first half.
Stopped
Post Published: 14 November 2009For the first time in the game, the Broncos did not score on a drive. They had to punt with 2:41 remaining.
